How's it Hangin'?

Does the thought of hanging artwork make you want to take a long walk off a short pier?? Here are some simple tips on how to get the look you want! Just like your furniture, artwork can immediately change a room’s mood. Get it right, and you’ll have yourself a stylish gallery wall that’s full of memories, shows off your personality & pulls your décor together. Get it wrong, and your gallery vision turns into a pockmarked hotchpotch wall of shame. Art to Wall Ratio: If you’re working with bare walls and not sure what size art you should hang, a general guideline to follow is: (wall width) x 0.57 = (ideal width of artwork). If you are hanging a grouping of art, treat the cluster as you would one single piece. Getting the Right Height: Too high & you’ll affect the room’s proportions. Too low & viewing will be uncomfortable. Proper height should be 57” from the center of piece to the floor. Of course, at home you need to consider furniture, smaller walls, doors & windows. If you’re confident in your artistic abilities, use your eye to judge what looks right. Hang art in relation to what’s already in your room. Just make sure it’s at your comfortable eye level. Working with Your Room: Connect artwork with your room’s elements. Some failsafe guidelines include Sofa: The artwork or grouping should be 2/3 of the width of the sofa & 5.5” – 7.5” above the sofa. Fireplace: The artwork or grouping should be at least 2/3 the width of the fireplace & 4” – 12” from the mantle. Dining Room: To factor in your seated viewing height, consider hanging art a little bit lower than you normally would. Vaulted or Higher Wall: To work with the extra space proportions, hang art 60”- 61” from floor to center of art piece. Hanging Groups of Artwork: Lay your pieces out on the floor first to see how it looks. Think about how they relate in terms of size, subject, color & theme. Rearrange as necessary, but first be sure to snap a pic so you can easily compare your options. Hope this helps keep some of you warm & dry!
