Rapid Relief

As the days start getting shorter, leaves change colours and the air turns crisp there is something inside of me that switches gears. After wood has been gathered, split and stacked focus shifts from the outdoor chores to the comforts of home. For me fall is all about routine, flannel sheets, hot drinks by the fire, freshly baked bread & gravy. Copious amount of it…on pretty much everything. Thoughts change from burning a hot dog at the fire pit to a perfectly roasted turkey. As we turn our efforts indoors it becomes apparent that our homes have been somewhat neglected. Once the kids have headed back to school and the house is quiet we have little choice but to look around and feel the need to clean. At least I do anyway. I thought this week I’d give some simple & easy cleaning tips for the bathroom. As a mom of 3 boys I know that this area is an important one to tackle. 1) Clean the bathroom after you shower or bath when the steam has loosened the dirt. 2) Eliminating mildew in grout between tiles may not be as difficult as you think. Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar, apply to affected area, wait 10 minutes & rinse. If a deeper cleanse is required, dip an old toothbrush into the vinegar and scrub gently. It should come clean with little effort. 3) Wash the shower curtains. Place curtains in the washing machine with laundry soap and recommended amount of bleach per load. The bleach eliminates the mildew, while the soap goes after the scum, shampoo stains and all the rest. This method will work on cloth, heavier vinyl & plastic. 4) Rub your clean ceramic tiles with car wax, let stand 10 minutes, then buff them as you would a car. They’ll gleam for you. 5) To get your cloudy faucets shining, first wipe off whatever is easy to remove. Next, swab fixtures liberally with ordinary vinegar. Soak a cloth or paper towel with vinegar and wrap it around faucet. After an hour, remove wrappings and give the fixtures a final rub with a fresh cloth. 6) If soap scum has built up on your shower doors, try lemon oil. If the buildup is heavy it may take a few application. Once clean, wiping them with the oil once a week should prevent scum from reappearing. 7) If mineral deposits have marked the water line of your toilet bowl try tossing a few denture tablets in, let them work overnight and whisk with the bowl brush in the morning. Repeat if needed & prevent future stains by repeating weekly.
