As I mentioned last week, moving sucks. It is likely one of the most stressful & exciting times of our lives (aside from planning our weddings and having children that is). Staying organized and planning ahead make the whole process a lot easier, but so does having a few handy packing tricks & tips up your sleeve. In my search for options to make this whole process a little easier I came across a few ideas that were helpful. 1) Masking tape on mirrors: Use masking tape to place a large “X” on your mirrors and glass frames. It won’t prevent breakage, but will absorb shock and keep glass in the frame in case it is dropped or shuffled. 2) Take a photo of your cords: Before disconnecting, take a quick snapshot of cords on the back of your television and electronics so you can remember where they all go. 3) Use rolling luggage for heavy items: Save your back and use rolling luggage for really heavy items like books. 4) Safely pack plates: Use disposable foam plates in between your delicate glass to prevent chipping and breakage. 5) Plastic wrap is your friend: No sense in emptying your silverware tray when you can use plastic wrap to keep items in their intended container. 6) Double up on fitted sheets: Protect your mattresses on moving day. Put one sheet on just like normal & then place another on the bottom for complete coverage. 7) Use towels to protect fragile items: Wrap your delicate items in towels and hand towels for extra protection. 8) Pack a first night box: Chances are you are not going to unpack and organize your new home the day of the move. Pack a box with all of your first night essentials – toilet paper, toiletries, medications, first aid kit, utility knife, bedding, disposable plates, cups and utensils, & let’s not forget the most important…COFFEE and coffee maker – load this in your personal vehicle so you’ll know exactly where it is. P.S. Home Depot carries moving boxes & supplies for a lot less than the moving companies charge.
