For many of us the idea of heading off into the wild blue yonder in search of some down time is important. I’m talking camping. For generations families have been packing up & heading out of congested areas to a simpler, laid back place. The idea of camping is different for all – some prefer the amenities of a cabin or holiday trailer, while others are brave enough to surround themselves with a flimsy piece of canvas. Hats off to you…seriously. Growing up I was lucky enough to have grandparents who owned a little cabin on a lake. I have many fond memories of times spent with family – everyone gathering for meals, boat rides, beach time & endless laughs. To this day the smell of Sunny Boy cereal still reminds me of my grandfather. He would cook it religiously every morning on the wood stove. Over the course of the years I have tried many different camping recipes & ideas. Some turned out great, while others were a huge fail. Fail example #1: Dryer lint in used toilet paper rolls (which I lovingly collected over the course of a winter) are not all that they’re cracked up to be. They are not easy to start, don’t stay lit & if there is any moisture they won’t work at all. The fire starter sticks (available in camping sections in stores) seem to work the best & they’re even waterproof! Fail example #2: Hot ham & swiss croissants. A few weeks ago my cousin & I decided to hit the bush for some bonding time. Being in charge of some meal prep I came across the above mentioned recipe. Sounded easy & delicious to me. When it came time to warm them up I placed the foil wrapped morsels over the open flame…& proceeded to walk away. I knew we might have a slight problem when the scent of burnt croissant wafted across the air. The uncharred parts were enjoyable, but I probably should’ve just stuck with a pot of Sunny Boy.
